Tuggles Is All Healed!

Tuggles is all healed! He is running around the backyard playing, chasing sticks, playing with toys and having fun! He jumps onto the sofas and beds and jumps over our rock wall! We are all so glad and so happy and we couldn't ask for a better dog leg and all!

Tuggles Out of Cast!!!

Tuggles doesn't have his cast on anymore! His leg has healed enough that his leg doesn't have to be in a cast anymore. He went to the vet yesterday and they removed the cast and also removed the staples! He is doing great! We have to keep his cone on for another week or two until its healed and he doesn't have a chance of licking it open. He is very happy right now!

Wow what a story!

    
 Meet Molly. She's a gray speckled pony who was abandoned by her owners when Katrina hit southern Louisiana, USA. She spent weeks on her own before finally being rescued and taken to a farm where abandoned animals were stockpiled. While there, she was attacked by a pit bull terrier, and almost died. Her gnawed right front leg became infected and her vet went to LSU for help. But LSU was overwhelmed, and this pony was a welfare case. You know how that goes.
 But after surgeon Rustin Moore met Molly, he changed his mind. He saw how the pony was careful to lie down on different sides so she didn't seem to get sores, and how she allowed people to handle her. She protected her injured leg. She constantly shifted her weight, and didn't overload her good leg. She was a smart pony with a serious survival ethic.
 Moore agreed to remove her leg below the knee and a temporary artificial limb was built. Molly walked out of the clinic and her story really begins there.
 This was the right horse and the right owner," Moore insists.
 Molly happened to be a one-in-a-million patient. She's tough as nails, but sweet, and she was willing to cope with pain. She made it obvious she understood (that) she was in trouble. The other important factor, according to Moore , is having a truly committed and compliant owner who is dedicated to providing the daily care required over the lifetime of the horse.

 Molly's story turns into a parable for life in post-Katrina Louisiana . The little pony gained weight, her mane felt a comb. A human prosthesis designer built her a leg.
 The prosthetic has given Molly a whole new life, Allison Barca DVM, Molly's regular vet, reports.
 And she asks for it! She will put her little limb out, and come to you and let you know that she wants you to put it on. Sometimes she wants you to take it off too." And sometimes, Molly gets away from Barca. "It can be pretty bad when you can't catch a three-legged horse", she laughs.
  Most important of all, Molly has a job now. Kay, the rescue farm owner, started taking Molly to shelters, hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers . Anywhere she thought that people needed hope. Wherever Molly went, she showed people her pluck. She inspired people. And she had a good time doing it.
 It's obvious to me that Molly had a bigger role to play in life", Moore said, "She survived the hurricane, she survived a horrible injury, and now she is giving hope to others."
 She's not back to normal," Barca concluded, "but she's going to be better. To me, she could be a symbol for New Orleans itself."
 
 

 

   
 This is Molly's most recent prosthesis. The bottom photo shows the ground surface that she stands on, which has a smiley face embossed in it. Wherever Molly goes, she leaves a smiley hoof print behind!

Tuggles Update

My dad took Tuggles for a bandage change and a x-ray of his leg today.  It is healing well with no noticeable difference for good or bad, which is good because it means he didn't break it again by jumping the baby gate! Yay! He has got a cool new blue bandage on that wont slip! Another yay!

Cookie is Home!

The poodle I've been taking care of for two months went home today! Her owner was sooooooooo happy to see her after being away for such a long time.... I miss her but I know she is happy to be with her owner again.

We saw the movie Hugo today! It was pretty good..... it followed the book well and it was funny. The Station Inspector and his dog Maximus were my favorite characters. They were really funny! It also represented the history of film making very well. I would recommend it to someone who would like to see a funny, somewhat historical, adventurous and clever film!

Tuggles & Surgery Update #2

Tuggles is in alot of pain today. He is picking his leg up when he walks and is limping. He has tried to jump the baby gate we put up for him. I just hope he hasn't hurt himself.....

Tuggles & Surgery Update

Tuggles is home! Yay! We picked him up from CUVS this evening and he is doing fine. He has a splint on and has a very fancy boot for when he goes outside. Now he is under Rimadyl (for inflammation), Clavamox (antibiotic) and Tramadol (for pain). He is eating and drinking well and going to the bathroom regularly. We want to thank Dr. Kramer and Dr. Serrano for everything:)

Holly

When I went to the barn this weekend to ride my pony (Tessa) this weekend, the vet was over to look at Holly. Holly is a filly that the barn bought when she cut herself so badly that the bone was exposed all the way from the hock to the cornet. They were going to put her down but the barn decided to buy her so they could try and fix her. When I was there the vet was changing the bandage on her wound. Holly's wound was closing up so you didn't see as much of the bone and the vet said the was doing much better but if the bone chips and it gets infected they might still have to put her down. She isn't out of the woods yet...... I'll keep you posted.

Spiral fracture of tibia

Over the weekend we adopted a dog named Tuggles! We rescued him from an organization called S.A.S.S. (Shelly's Angel Saving Strays). Before we adopted him we knew that he got hit by a car in his foster home in Tennessee and got a spiral fracture in his back left tibia but the vet in Tennessee (who operated on him after the accident) cleared him for adoption. After having him for a few days he started limping and not running as much so we took him to CUVS and talked to Dr. Serrano and Dr. Kramer and they said he had to have Surgery. We took x-rays of his leg and found out that the doctors who did the
surgery in Tennessee had wrapped wires around his leg when he was little without judging he was going to grow so he has wires digging into his bone and that they took out the last screw in the plate so now his leg is crooked. On top of all that they left a drill bit in there! Its insanity! Tuggles is at CUVS now having surgery.
